In France, the 1st of May isn’t just about the arrival of spring; it’s also a day of cherished tradition. One of the most beloved customs is the giving of lily of the valley, or “muguet” in French. This tradition dates back to the Renaissance, when Charles IX was presented with lily of the valley flowers as a token of luck and prosperity. Touched by the gesture, he decided to start the tradition of offering them to the ladies of his court every 1st of May. Since then, the delicate white blooms have symbolized happiness and good fortune. Today, on May Day, streets and markets in France are filled with vendors selling small bouquets of lily of the valley, and people exchange them as a sign of friendship and good wishes. It’s a beautiful tradition that I miss since moving back to the UK, so thank you to fellow Francophile Judy Mansfield for allowing me to use her beautiful photo.
